PROJECT 16: CareerLeader

OVERVIEW:

Some of the most important variables that an interviewer is trying to assess in a selection decision are your interests. Our interests are such an important ingrained part of our lives that they change only minimally as we age after the age of about 20 years. What now interests you is likely to interest you in several years hence. Yes, you will add new interests but early interests, based on extensive empirical research, typically stay with you.

Why are interests important to others? Because interests tend to provide the fuel for what motivates you. Interest influences your decisions as to what skills and abilities you need to nurture and develop. People rarely study subjects and learn new skills if they are not interested.

CareerLeader is discussed in your textbook as a part of self-assessment, but it is just as relevant to have this information as you begin to interview. In the selection process it is common for employers to test you for your interests and personality to further confirm what is evaluated and discovered in the interview. They use instruments similar to CareerLeader and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, but these tests tend to be more job-specific for legal reasons.

It is wise for you to take these tests on your own before an employer administers them to you. You want to know what they are likely to discover. You allow what you say in the interview to be supported and validated by the results of these tests.

CareerLeader will give you assessment results for motivational factors (values), interests, and skills and abilities. Your objective should be to review the results and see how they lead to the Career Profiles. Are the Career Profiles where you are directed consistent with the positions for which you are interviewing?

You will also discover that the words resulting from this assessment tend to lead you to see how your past behaviors reinforced your desire to accept employment in your chosen positions and even specific employers. This, in turn, helps you use the S.T.A.R. technique more effectively and confidently in your future interviews.

Career management starts with understanding yourself!

WRITTEN PROJECT

A.     Take CareerLeader Test: Complete the CareerLeader College instrument. Copy and paste the printer-friendly version of your results into your written project (preferably in WORD).

B.     Select/Copy Results: Read through your assessment results in your summary in the three areas; in the detailed results description of your interests, values and abilities; and in your career path matches. What factors best motivate you? Describe your highest motivators. Select, copy and paste results in the WORD document.

C.    Analyze Results of Interests: Under “Business Career Profiles” select a career related to the field which you will be entering. Read the description of that career. Write one or more pages comparing your interests with the profile. If you were in the position you described, point out what problems you foresee related to your interests. If you foresee no problems, explain why you would be a good match for this position based on your interests. Your last paragraph should be a summary list of your 3-5 highest ranked interests. Analyze your interests results.

D.    Analyze Results of Values: Write one or more pages comparing your values with those of the profile. If you were in the position you described, point out what problems you foresee related to your values. If you foresee no problems, explain why you would be a good match for this position based on your values. Your last paragraph should be a summary list of your 3-5 highest ranked values. Analyze the results of your values description.

E.     Analyze Results of Abilities: Write one or more pages comparing your abilities with those of the profile. If you were in the position you described, point out what problems you foresee related to your abilities. If you foresee no problems, explain why you would be a good match for the position based on your abilities. Your last paragraph should be a summary list of your 3-5 highest ranked abilities. Analyze the results of your abilities assessment.

F.     Impact: Has this activity changed your opinion of your chosen career field? Why or why not?

G.    S.T.A.R. Aid: Assume that you will be interviewing for one of the job descriptions for which you have the best qualifications. Which situations and circumstances in your past behaviors will you use in constructing an interview situation that will best illustrate your interests, values, and abilities in your interviews? What S.T.A.R.s from Figure 18.2 in your textbook support your future plans? Identify three S.T.A.R.s from your past behaviors that you plan to use in future interviews.
